Since 2003 GlobCom team members have had the unique opportunity to meet each other at a symposium after a couple of months of online collaboration. GlobCom students collaborate in global virtual teams. Each team has the same client brief and develops a global proposal. This year nine international student teams will compete with each other just like international PR agencies pitching for one global client.
Since then, GlobCom gives students of the 2nd and 3rd years of strategic communication (public relations) undergraduate and 1st year graduate programs the opportunity to work with colleagues from different parts of the world and with different experiences, enriching them both professionally and personally. That being said, GlobCom prepares future professionals for the global world, making them aware of the existing cultural differences and teaching them how to handle modern communication tools.
The GlobCom project and symposium: what's the story?
GlobCom was created in 2002 by Dr. Volker Stoltz, the chairman of the GlobCom Institute, a lecturer at Erfurt University, and former European CEO for the global PR firm Weber Shandwick. This project was the evolution of an older Dr. Stoltz’s project – the professor initiated a co-operation within the European Weber Shandwick’s offices, where were formed culturally diverse teams to create advanced communication concepts for specific clients.
GlobCom symposium was in Erfurt (2003), Barcelona (2004 and 2011), Gorizia (2005), Palma de Mallorca (2006), Lisbon (2007), Abu Dhabi (2008, 2009, 2012 and 2016), Cheltenham (2010), Stellenbosch (2013), Boston (2014), Sarawak, Malaysia (2015), Bangalore (2017), Bangkok (2018), Lisbon (2019), Vilnius (2020) (online), Barcelona (2021) (online and face-to-feace), Barcelona (2022).
Due to the war in Ukraine in 2022, partners from Russia suspended their participation in GlobCom project.
